The Meaning and Tradition of Christkindl

The spirit of Christkindl is rooted in centuries-old European Christmas traditions of generosity, kindness, faith, and giving.

The story of St. Martin of Tours, a fourth-century Roman soldier who famously shared his cloak with a freezing beggar, embodies the compassion and generosity that remain central to many European holiday celebrations. His legacy of helping others is reflected in the traditions of sharing, charitable giving, and bringing joy to children.

The Christkind, meaning Christ Child in German, became associated with Christmas gift-giving during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Over time, Christkindl markets developed into beloved holiday gatherings filled with handcrafted gifts, traditional foods, music, sparkling lights, and opportunities for families and communities to celebrate together.
