Two OK Mozart Festival Leaders Retire, New Chair Named
BARTLESVILLE, Okla. — OK Mozart International Festival organizers are already in the planning stages for the June 2017 festival. According to Mary Lynn Mihm-Howk, recently elected chairwoman of the OK Mozart Board of Directors, the festival bids a fond farewell to two of its retiring executives.
Dr. Randy Thompson, OK Mozart executive director since Sept. 2013, retired in July, and Charlie Daniels, longtime festival patron and OK Mozart board chairman, also retired in July.
“It’s been a real joy working at OK Mozart,” said Thompson, who will continue practicing on the organ and spoiling his 15 grandchildren. Thompson, who holds a doctorate in music, also served during the span of 50 years as conductor, music director, professor of music and Diaconal Minister.
Board officials expressed their deep appreciation for the fundraising and artistic acumen Thompson brought to the festival, as well as his lifelong passion for music.
“When I think of Randy, I always associate him with Mozart, because he portrayed Mozart during the festival for many years. His enthusiasm and dedication to the arts is exemplified by his love for music and the talents he brought forth,” said Mihm-Howk.
A newly appointed management committee consisting of board members and a staff representative will assume the executive director’s duties.
Daniels, chairman of the board for 12 years, had the determination and generosity for making the festival a continuing success, said Mihm-Howk.
“Daniels’ combined passion for classical music and community service was evidenced by his collaboration with such organizations as the Boy Scouts of America, of which he was chairman of the board for the Cherokee Area Council. The Scouts volunteered during the OK Mozart Woolaroc outdoor concert each year.”
In an email to Mihm-Howk, Daniels said it has been an honor to serve the festival for 12 years.
“You can count on my continued support as we all look forward to the 2017 festival.”
Held every year in June, the OK Mozart International Festival celebrates classical as well as contemporary music, along with showcase events that feature local points of interest, additional music venues, children’s activities and more. For festival information, visit okmozart.com.
